How Hi-Lo works

A card is dealt face up. Guess whether the next one will be higher or the same, or lower or the same, and the pot grows by the exact odds of that call. Keep going as long as you like and cash out between cards. One wrong call and the chain is broken.

This game is one of the VegasSlots Originals: built in-house, provably fair, and every win counts towards the weekly league.

Aces are low and kings are high, and a tie always counts as a win for the side you picked. On an ace, “lower or the same” is the 1-in-13 shot that pays big, while on a seven both calls are close to a coin flip.

The odds behind every call

Each card is one of 13 equally likely ranks. From a given card, the chance of “higher or the same” is the number of ranks from it up to the king, divided by 13, and “lower or the same” works the same way from the ace. On a six, for example, higher-or-same is 8 in 13 and lower-or-same is 6 in 13.

The first call of a chain carries a 3% edge. Every later call pays exactly one divided by its chance. So the long-run return is 97% no matter how long your chains are or which calls you make, and cashing out early or late costs nothing in expectation.

Here is how the pricing looks from a six. Higher-or-same has a chance of 8 in 13, about 61.5%, and pays roughly ×1.63. Lower-or-same has 6 in 13, about 46.2%, and pays roughly ×2.17. The safer call pays less, the riskier call pays more, and on any call after the first both are priced at exactly one divided by the chance. When you chain calls, the multipliers stack, so a few modest calls can add up to a large number.

Provably fair

All the cards of a round come from one committed seed: card one from the round hash, and every next card from the hash of the previous one. The hash is shown before you play and the seed is revealed afterwards. The “Verify last round” button deals the same cards again in your browser, so you can see nothing was changed along the way.

Tips that actually matter

  • The better side is not a better bet. Choosing the side with the higher chance pays less, and choosing the other pays more. Both return the same on average. The choice sets your risk, not your edge.
  • Remember that ties win. “Higher or the same” and “lower or the same” overlap on the card you hold, which is why the two chances add up to more than 100%.
  • Cash out when you want to. A long chain looks impressive, but each call pays exactly its odds, so stopping early is no mistake.
  • Do not count on patterns. The cards come from a committed seed, and each rank is equally likely at every draw. The “Card counter” badge is a nice name for eight right calls in a row, not a skill that beats the 97%.
  • Beware the first call. It carries the 3% edge, so it is the one call in a chain that pays slightly less than its true odds.

What you play for

Hi-Lo is played with XP, which has no cash value and cannot be bought or withdrawn. Wins count towards the daily leaderboard and the weekly season. The leagues are Bronze from 0, Silver from 1,000, Gold from 5,000, Platinum from 15,000 and Diamond from 40,000 season XP, with instant promotion. Three daily missions are the same for everyone and reset at 00:00 UTC.

The game is for 18+ only, and a help line is shown under it.
